Salt lovers rejoiced when savory flavors started making their way into dessert.  Cayenne pepper ice cream.  Bacon cupcakes.  Sriracha candy bars.  But is there anything more decadent than a foie gras donut?  At Umamicatessen, the FG&J donut is a golden treasure, oozing with foie gras mousse and forest berry jam, then dusted with powdered sugar and a crowning of crumbled peanuts.  Outside the donut surface is warm, delicately crisped.  Inside the foie gras is buttery and elegant; the jam rich and sweet.  It’s almost mesmerizing to watch the deep purple jam run into the puddle of mousse, a lava swirl of savory and sweet.  And as you taste the crunch of the peanuts, you begin to wonder if you can ever return to the simplicity of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich again.  With only 20 days remaining before foie gras is banned from California, consuming the FG&J already feels nostalgic.  Surely, anything this divine is meant to be eaten.

Umamicatessen, 852 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90014. (213) 413-8626.  Open daily from 11 am – 12 am.
